Public facts

National full-service PEO

Public PEO (NYSE: TNET) for small and midsize businesses, with a separate HR Plus (non-PEO) option, ESAC accreditation since 1995, and an IRS-certified PEO subsidiary.

Overview

TriNet Group provides HR outsourcing for small and midsize businesses. The full PEO offering covers payroll, access to large-group benefits, compliance and risk mitigation, workers’ compensation, and an all-in-one HR platform, including AI-assisted employee tasks. TriNet also sells HR Plus, a platform-plus-support option without the same co-employment model. The company says it works with businesses from five to more than 1,000 employees, was founded in 1988, has held ESAC accreditation since 1995, and that a subsidiary is an IRS Certified PEO. Across TriNet PEO and HR Plus, it reports processing $70 billion in payroll in 2025. Global hiring and payroll are offered separately through partner Multiplier.

Why it matters TriNet is a public SMB PEO with a documented PEO vs. ASO-style split (PEO vs. HR Plus), long ESAC history, and an IRS-certified subsidiary—plus an explicit PEPM-plus-benefits pricing structure.

Target buyer
Small and midsize U.S. employers (vendor range: 5 to 1,000+ employees) comparing a full PEO versus TriNet HR Plus, including professional and multi-state firms.
Pricing model
Custom PEPM plus separate benefits, workers’ compensation, payroll taxes, and add-ons
TriNet states that pricing depends on company size and business state, and that a personalized quote is provided after a consultant meeting. The PEO FAQ describes a per-employee-per-month (PEPM) service fee plus separate costs for employee benefits, workers’ compensation, payroll taxes, and add-ons. No list PEPM is published. A Forrester TEI study commissioned by TriNet (2026) is used in marketing (66% ROI over three years); it is not a price list.

Overview

TriNet is a U.S. HR and PEO provider for small and midsize businesses. The homepage states that more than 22,000 businesses choose TriNet. Two commercial offers are marketed:

  • TriNet PEO — full professional employer organization with co-employment: the client keeps control of day-to-day operations while allocating certain employer responsibilities to TriNet under a service agreement.
  • HR Plus — platform plus support for employers that want expertise without the full PEO model.

The PEO FAQ contrasts PEO and ASO: a PEO involves co-employment, generally processes payroll under the PEO’s tax ID, and may sponsor certain benefits; an ASO does not involve co-employment, uses the client’s tax ID, and does not sponsor benefits.

TriNet was founded in 1988. It states ESAC accreditation since 1995 (certificate materials on PEOReliability.org show ongoing verification) and that a subsidiary is classified as a Certified Professional Employer Organization by the IRS (announced July 2, 2018). Across PEO and HR Plus, TriNet says it processed $70 billion in payroll in 2025.

Target size on the FAQ is five to more than 1,000 employees. Headquarters-related BBB materials identify Dublin, California.

Integrations & Ecosystem

Named integration: QuickBooks Online for general-ledger sync. Time and attendance is described as integrating with payroll. Global services run through Multiplier under separate terms. A full marketplace list was not published on the PEO pages reviewed.

Pricing

Quote-based. Official FAQ: PEPM service fee plus separate employee benefits, workers’ compensation, payroll taxes, and add-ons. Factors include company size and “the state of your business.” A pricing page is linked from the PEO overview; no public dollar PEPM appeared on the pages fetched.

Notes & Limitations

  • HR Plus is not a PEO; do not conflate it with co-employment benefits sponsorship.
  • Global services are partner-delivered and extra-cost.
  • $70 billion payroll is PEO + HR Plus combined.
  • Forrester figures are from a commissioned study, not a guarantee.
  • “National” follows multi-state compliance language and 50-state educational content; no exclusion list was found.
