Public facts

Benefits administration platform

Cloud benefits administration platform for large employers, with API carrier connectivity (Boost), billing, ACA/COBRA services, and broker/HCM distribution.

Overview

PlanSource is a U.S. cloud benefits administration company based in Orlando, Florida. It sells a unified platform for enrollment, eligibility, carrier billing, employee experience, and optional outsourced ACA, COBRA, accounts, and service-center work. Distribution includes employers, brokers, consultants, resellers, HCM partners, and carriers. Vista Equity Partners announced an agreement to buy PlanSource on March 25, 2019 and closed the deal on April 22, 2019. The vendor’s Boost program uses APIs for plan setup, enrollment, EOI, provider search, and carrier SSO with a published list of live carriers.

Why it matters It is a large-employer benefits-admin specialist with a documented API carrier program (Boost) and a broker/HCM reseller channel, not an all-in-one HRIS.

Overview

PlanSource provides benefits administration software and related services from Orlando, Florida. Third-party company profiles date founding to 2008. It is not an all-in-one HCM: the vendor positions itself as benefits-only, with deep workflow rules, carrier connectivity, and optional outsourced administration sitting on the same platform.

Buyers and users listed on the site include HR/benefits teams, reseller partners, and carriers. The FAQ states the product is purpose-built for organizations with 1,000+ employees, especially multi-state groups, complex eligibility, and large voluntary/point-solution stacks. Brokers and consultants are treated as recommenders and implementation partners, not as the sole sales motion.

Vista Equity Partners signed a definitive acquisition agreement on March 25, 2019 (GlobeNewswire). PlanSource announced the close on April 22, 2019 after regulatory approval. Vista described the company as continuing to operate independently at that time. Older profiles also mention Great Hill Partners as a prior owner.

The marketing site was rebranded around experience, AI, and service; functional modules still map to classic ben-admin (enrollment, billing, compliance) plus a service center.

Key Capabilities

  • HR administration: configurable plans, populations, eligibility, and a single view across vendors.
  • Employee experience: guided enrollment, claims-aware decision support, communications, mobile-friendly access, and an AI virtual assistant (vendor says multilingual). Human agents remain available.
  • Boost carrier integration: API plan configuration (plans/rates/rules), real-time enrollment with error handling and audit trail, in-enrollment EOI via SSO, in-flow provider search, and SSO to carrier member portals. Live-carrier lists are published by API type on the carriers page (see Integrations).
  • Billing: consolidated carrier billing, reconciliation, and payment.
  • Compliance and services: ACA measurement and reporting (federal and state mandates are mentioned), full-lifecycle COBRA, QMCSO, dependent verification, and consumer-account administration (HSA, FSA, HRA, LSA).
  • Other services: advocacy/navigation, custom communications, total-rewards statements, and a client-specific employee service center. Staffing model described: account manager, analysts, executive sponsor, and SMEs.
  • AI uses described (with human review): implementation/config from plan documents, automated testing, EDI setup assistance, reporting, communications drafting, dependent verification, virtual assistant, and service-center sentiment/coaching. No independent accuracy metrics are published.

A Hartford partner quote on the services page claims EOI API completion rose from 27% to 87%; that is a named-customer claim, not a platform-wide SLA.

Integrations & Ecosystem

HCM: PlanSource says it syncs in real time with leading HRIS/payroll/WFM systems. The official pages reviewed do not publish a complete HCM list. Secondary sources commonly name Workday, UKG, Paylocity, and BambooHR; those names were not verified on the PlanSource pages fetched for this entry.

Carriers: Boost is the documented differentiator. Published live connections as of the carriers page:

  • Plan configuration API: Guardian, MetLife, Mutual of Omaha
  • Enrollment API: Aflac, Ameritas, Guardian, MetLife, Prudential, The Hartford, UHC, Unum
  • EOI SSO and decision notification: Aflac, Hartford, Guardian, Lincoln Financial Group, MetLife, Mutual of Omaha, New York Life, Prudential, Sun Life, Symetra, UHC, Unum, Voya
  • EOI submission and decision: Reliance Matrix
  • EOI SSO only: The Standard
  • Provider directory: Guardian, Hartford, MetLife
  • Member portal SSO: Guardian, MetLife, Prudential

A Partner Marketplace offers curated point solutions (examples given: women’s health, financial wellness, legal). Individual marketplace vendors were not fully listed on the pages reviewed.

PlanSource is not a payroll engine; deductions depend on HCM/payroll integrations.

Pricing

No public price list. Fees are custom. Implementation duration is described as variable; the vendor claims AI shortens setup but publishes no standard timeline or cost.

2019-era materials cited “more than 5 million consumers” on the platform; current official pages fetched here do not repeat a live customer or employee count.

Notes & Limitations

  • PEPM and module pricing are unknown from public sources.
  • HCM partner names on analyst sites were not confirmed on PlanSource.com in this pass.
  • Boost “live with select carriers” lists can change; they are only as current as the carriers page on the research date.
  • Vista still owning the company after 2019 was not re-confirmed with a 2026 owner filing in this pass; no later sale was found in the searches run.
  • Founder identity is not stated on the current homepage/FAQ; third-party databases name Ted White. CEO at the Vista deal was Dayne Williams.
  • Security certifications (SOC 2, ISO 27001) appear in secondary reviews, not on the pages fetched here.
  • “National” is inferred from U.S. employer/ACA-COBRA positioning; no state-exclusion list was found.
