Maxwell Health (Sun Life)

Public facts

Discontinued benefits platform

Sun Life–owned digital benefits enrollment platform (acquired 2018); permanently discontinued effective July 1, 2026, with no extension.

Overview

Maxwell Health was a U.S. benefits administration and enrollment platform acquired by Sun Life in 2018 and launched as a combined Sun Life + Maxwell Health digital platform in 2019. Official support notices state Sun Life permanently discontinued the Maxwell platform effective July 1, 2026. The Maxwell Health website now directs remaining questions to a Sun Life representative or client services. Existing Sun Life and other-carrier coverage was described as remaining in force; employers were told to move to another benefits-technology platform.

Why it matters Maxwell still appears in broker and employer conversations, but it is no longer an available enrollment system; treat it as a sunsetted Sun Life asset.

Overview

Maxwell Health was a Boston-area benefits technology company whose stated mission was to simplify employee benefits and insurance. Sun Life acquired Maxwell Health in 2018. On April 1, 2019, Sun Life and Maxwell announced a combined digital platform for employers and brokers: year-round benefits and HR access, enrollment in medical coverage and Sun Life products, and support for products from other insurers the employer chose. Brokers could quote the platform beginning April 1, 2019, for July 1 effective dates.

Sun Life later published that it would permanently discontinue the Maxwell Health platform effective July 1, 2026, with no option for extension. The stated reason was a shift toward all-in-one HR/payroll platforms and partnerships with other benefits-technology vendors. Official language said insurance coverage with Sun Life and other providers would remain in force, and that employers would keep Maxwell access until they moved to a new platform or until July 1, 2026, whichever came first.

As of this research date (2026-08-23), maxwellhealth.com states the product has been discontinued and is no longer available to access, and points users to a Sun Life representative or client services at 1-800-247-6875 or clientservices@sunlife.com. A designated migration contact (service.enablement@sunlife.com) was named on the sunset article indexed from the Maxwell resource center.

This directory entry exists so buyers do not treat Maxwell as a live product.

Key Capabilities

These capabilities are historical (pre-sunset), from Sun Life’s 2019 launch release and Maxwell support FAQs:

  • Digital enrollment for medical and ancillary/Sun Life products.
  • Employer admin functions: add hires, life events, terminations, open enrollment, employee data edits, deduction views, and reports.
  • Year-round employee portal (not only annual enrollment).
  • Links from Maxwell into Sun Life Connect for some plan-administration tasks (later reduced as Maxwell became the employee/benefit admin surface).
  • Maxwell did not act as COBRA administrator; it could mark COBRA-qualifying events.

None of the above is available as a new subscription after July 1, 2026.

Integrations & Ecosystem

Maxwell was owned and distributed by Sun Life U.S. The 2019 release said the platform could enroll products from any employer-chosen insurance provider, not only Sun Life.

The sunset notice told employers to migrate to a “BenTech” partner platform and said Sun Life would help with data access but would not build a replacement system for the client. Specific current partner names were not captured from a successful fetch of the sunset article (Cloudflare blocked the resource-center URL in this pass).

sunlife.com/us is the corporate U.S. site; it is not a Maxwell product catalog.

Pricing

No current pricing. Historical distribution was broker-quoted. There is no public PEPM to list for a discontinued system.

Notes & Limitations

  • Do not implement Maxwell for new groups.
  • Direct fetch of maxwellhealth.com returned little body text; discontinuation wording is from search-indexed official pages and Sun Life news.
  • The Maxwell resource-center sunset article was Cloudflare-blocked on direct fetch; indexed excerpts were used and should be re-checked if a live URL is needed for legal/contract questions.
  • Employee Navigator, Rippling, bswift, and other platforms are separate vendors; Sun Life did not publish a single mandated replacement in the excerpts reviewed.
  • National (historical U.S.) availability; no state matrix.
